Training pillars

Building on the training programme provided by the Doctoral College at King's College and the Faculties of Arts & Humanities and Social Science and Public Policy, the cohort funded through the programme will receive training in 3 key area:
Interdisciplinarity and intercultural dialogue: each scholarship and student might work within specific disciplines or geographical/cultural focus, depending on the project requirements; however, within their Upgrade submission, students will be required to explain how they see the project more broadly contributing to the Programme vision – making connections across other projects (within the programme cohort and academics and partners involved). Students will be asked to critically contextualise their research in its understanding of African creativity's value (cultural, economic and societal). This will foster interdisciplinarity but also intercultural dialogue across the cohort.
Equality, Diversity and Inclusion training: EDI will be central to the PhD training, embedded and discussed within other training and expertise developed (for example, in relation to specific literature, methods and research tools). Students will be encouraged to engage closely with the full spectrum of resources KDC to support inclusive and culturally competent research, including KEATS courses on Cultural Competency and Professional Skills in a Globalised World. At the Upgrade, the student will be asked to critically reflect on how their project engages with EDI not only theoretically but also in their approach to mapping the literature, research methods and data collection plans.
Impact and policy engagement: At the heart of the PhD training (and as highlighted by the letters of support attached) is the need for emerging researchers to think about the impact of their work on our understanding of Africa and its contribution to the global creative economy or the policy that might support more EDI practices that reshape the sector. A cornerstone of the proposal is to draw on the commitment of partners to facilitate PhD students' engagement with cultural sectors beyond the academy and open opportunities for engagement and dissemination of their research.
